Thaksin avoids investment discussion with Thein Sein

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra did not discuss investment projects in Myanmar during his meeting with President Thein Sein in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday, Thaksin's legal adviser Noppadon Pattama says.
Thaksin believes investment cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand is a matter between the respective governments. The subject was not raised during the meeting to avoid Thaksin being accused of having vested interests, Mr Noppadon said.
He said he talked to Thaksin on the phone following his one-day visit to Myanmar yesterday.
Mr Noppadon said Thein Sein had invited Thaksin to lecture on rural development and poverty reduction. The lecture date is yet to be determined.
Thaksin and Thein Sein discussed many issues including the future of Asean, the legal adviser said.
Thaksin had originally planned a two-day visit which was to include a meeting with red-shirt supporters and Pheu Thai MPs in Tachilek near the Thai border.
However, he cut short his trip yesterday amid rumours of an assassination plot against him.
Rumours began circulating after Myanmar authorities allegedly found weapons in a building close to where Thaksin was due to stay in Tachilek.
Privy councillor Gen Surayud Chulanont yesterday dismissed accusations by Thaksin's son, Panthongtae, that he was behind the alleged plot to assassinate Thaksin.
The Wall Street Journal ran a story on Tuesday casting doubt over the assassination plot.
In the article, a senior Myanmar police officer denied any link between the weapons seizure and a plot to kill Thaksin.
The weapons seizure in Tachilek was drug related, Pol Maj Min Kyaw Thu said.
"It has nothing to do with Thaksin...There is absolutely no plot to assassinate Thaksin," the Wall Street Journal quoted him as saying.
